PAS presents LightPod: Lightboard meets Podcast

With the newly constructed Lightboard studio, the Laboratory of Process Automation Systems is now able to present a new and original teaching format: LightPod.
LightPod videos are intended as supplementary material for courses, such as machine learning methods for engineers. In short videos, an expert and an interviewer are discussing selected and complex topics. The discussion is visually enhanced through the Lightboard.
A lightboard is a transparent board on which educators can write with neon markers while facing the camera and therefore the audience. Text is visibly "glowing" through illumination from the edges of the board. Apart from handwritten content, plots, figures and animations can be shown to enhance the discussion.
In the first LightPod series, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Sergio Lucia and Felix Fiedler discuss topics from machine learning.
Construction
The Lightboard studio was planned and constructed entirely by the staff of the Laboratory of Process Automation Systems.
The board is the core element of the construction and consists of a large glas pane and a solid frame. In the frame, there is a stripe of LEDs surrounding the glass to illuminate the writing on the board.

Lightboard
The characteristic style of a Lightboard recording can be seen in this image. Only the presenter(s) as well as the content are visible. The background fades to black.
This visual effect is achieved by proper illumination in front of a black background and proper settings of the camera. Interactive elements (plots, animations) through a composition with PowerPoint slides. The presenter(s) see the composition on a control monitor behind the camera, thus enabling interaction with these materials.
The presenter(s) fortunately don't have to practice writing in reverse to operate the Lightboard. The image is simply flipped while capturing.
